The Scarborough Fair is a vibrant, year-round programme of distinctive arts, heritage, extreme sports, and illuminated spectacles across Britain’s first tourist seaside destination. Made possible with strategic public investment from the UK Government’s Pride in Place funding and the York &  North Yorkshire Combined Authority Mayoral High Streets Fund, it is an ambitious, community-focussed initiative to re-energise coastal life, celebrate local talent, and welcome visitors across five distinct seasonal festivals.

Our Heritage & Revival

From Medieval Market to Contemporary Renaissance

How a 45-day medieval trade congregation immortalized in song evolved into Britain's boldest cultural revival movement.

The Legendary Past

The historic Scarborough Fair ran continuously for 45 days every August and September from 1253 through the late 18th century.

Chartered by royal authority, it transformed this rugged North Sea haven into a global intersection of maritime commerce.Merchants, jesters, clothiers, and seafarers flocked from Scandinavia, the Baltic, Flanders, and beyond.

Immortalized in the enduring English folk ballad with its evocative refrains of parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme, the Fair came to embody the romance, resilience, and spirited barter of coastal Britain.

1253 - 18th Century

  • A crossroads of northern European merchants, shipwrights, and troubadours.

The Modern Renaissance

Today, The Scarborough Fair has been reborn-not merely as a single commerce exchange, but as an expansive coastal cultural engine. It links the sweeping sands of South Bay, the open rollers of North Bay, the brooding 12th-century Castle headland, and the historic town centre through year-round artistic expression.

From open-access fringe theater and contemporary gallery trails to beachfront action sports and nocturnal castle illumination trails, we are building a cultural platform that puts local pride, creativity, and coastal economic resilience right at the center.

Present Day & Tomorrow

  • Re-igniting the Yorkshire coastline through community-first cultural leadership.
